06 LS4C - Communicate Using Affirmations

Life Skills for Children

Affirmations discussed in 05 LS5C can be used to help open communication channels between yourself and your child. Using the method discussed below might give you access to what they are thinking, or what is happening in their life. Here is guideline for creating communication:

With this example, the child has been given cards with affirmations they can read by themselves or with you as a listener. The example list can be viewed by clicking here to read the original affirmation blog post.

Let's begin by asking your child(ren) if they would like to read some affirmation cards. Ask the to child pick an affirmation card to read and really listen intently while the child reads. Suggest the child talks about how that particular affirmation relates to something in their life.

You can give them an example using your choice of affirmation. For instance, tell the child your affirmation of choice, for this blog we can use, "I am thankful". Now describe how that affirmation is showing up in your life, perhaps something life, "I am thankful for the love of my family. They make me so happy, they are the treasures of my life".

Now, let's say the child picks the affirmation, "I am helpful". You can reinforce the fact that they are helpful and talk about that. Chances are your child will be more than willing to offer more examples of how they been helpful at school or to their friends, etc. They key here is to open the channels of communication. Giving your undivided attention can be very eye opening, possibly even hearing something that is happening you would otherwise not be privy to.

One more example ... perhaps the child picks the affirmation, "I am brave." Why does the child feel brave? Perhaps the child stood up to a bully a school, helped a friend being bullied or is feeling fearful because they are being bullied. Maybe the child WANTS to feel brave because they are feeling afraid. You just never know where this type of communication will lead.

This exercise can become a catalyst for understanding what is happening in the life of your child. It can open the channel of communication. It can give you a small window of opportunity to gain insight you might never know about. We live in a world where parents are struggling with time. More now than any other time in history, families are extremely busy with demanding schedules of work, raising a family and trying to balance life in general.
